René Lalique - 'Chrysis' Car Mascot

$3995 AUD

Item 3220

An Art Deco glass car mascot modelled as a kneeling nude leaning back with her hair billowing behind her. Stencilled signature 'R. Lalique, France'.

French, Circa 1931

*This model was introduced in 1931 and also produced as a statuette but without the ridge encircling the base. The ridge was to faciltate the radiator cap mounting of a vehicle to fix & support the mascot.

*1 This example exhibits a parti colouration between the upper & lower parts of the figure which could possibly indicate that it was indeed mounted as a car mascot and exposed to sunlight & UV rays

*2 In ancient Greece, Chrysis was the priestess of Hera, the temple at Argos. She accidentally burned the temple down in 423 BC during the time of the Peloponnesian War. In addition to other references, the destruction of the temple, Chrysis, and the circumstances are documented by Thucydides in his history of that war.
