An antique desk seal modelled as a bust of Diana The Huntress after the original by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. Engraved with a stylised monogram to base. Signed ‘F. Barbedienne’ to rear.
• Ferdinand Barbedienne, (1810-92) operated an important bronze foundry, active in Paris from 1839 until the foundry’s closure in 1954.
Barbedienne collaborated with Achille Collas, who had invented a method for the mechanical size reduction of larger sculptures. This method allowed for the reproduction of reduced versions of famous Classical and contemporary sculptures by noted French sculptors, including August Rodin.
